About Us
We have been able to trace the land back to the 1800’s. The land was wooded and believed to be full of foliage. The stream that runs along the northwest part of the property was probably the same as it is today. It is believed Indians hunted on the land. Even today it is common to find Indian arrowheads while turning the soil.
The May Family Farm was established in 1927 by Fred and Mayme May. The tree filled land was thinned and cleared with horses and dynamite. This created open fields to be plowed and planted. They survived the depression by tapping the remaining maple trees for syrup and transporting the refined maple syrup to Akron for sale. It took 40 gallons of raw tree sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. It is believe that a gallon of syrup yielded $1.50 of income.
In 1962, Fred and Mayme sold the land to their grandson Lee May. In 1963, Lee and Betty began their farming traditions. With the help of their four sons, they have proudly grown the farm into what it is today. Presently the farm grown produce includes: 10 varieties of sweet corn, 3 varieties of beans, 4 varieties of tomatoes, 4 varieties of peppers and 8 different types of pumpkins. In 1963, Lee began wholesaling the pumpkins to stores and markets in various parts of the state.
In 1995, the May Family began offering educational tours of the farm, fall hayrides, pick your own pumpkin outings, and all out country fun. Over the last several years they have expanded the events to include a Corn May-ze, Themed Hayrides, Picnic & Play Area, Group Party Space, and an Old Fashion Country Store. The store carries handmade items grown on the farm.
Betty and Lee May proudly invite you to “Spend a Day in the Country”. Come and share in part of history. Enjoy this years Fall Harvest!
